Full podcast: Discover how much of a game-changer AI and machine learning is, and how it’s benefitting broadcast businesses. Find out how the industry is looking to adapt, what technologies and AI tools have already been adopted, and how to keep on top of innovative technologies in such a rapidly evolving market place.

This CTAM Europe webinar recapped key IBC topics and trends including AI by Maria Ingold and FAST by Marion Ranchet. Described as “staggeringly good”, “very, very interesting”, and “great session”! I discussed the fear of AI, what innovations IBC saw in AI including Machine Learning and Generative AI, and what IBC spoke about in terms of ethics, bias and regulation around AI.

Post-panel summary and highlights for IBC 2023. Making and saving money with AI— ethically! That includes the shift from Industry 4.0— which is more about automation—to Industry 5.0—which is more about augmentation. AI can help do more of those mundane tasks!

This panel looked at the areas where businesses can see the most value from AI, what experimentation is taking place, and what misperceptions need to be addressed. Chaired by SMPTE, co-panellists included Media.Monks, NBCUniversal Peacock and AWS Media & Entertainment. We shared our approach to AI, what use cases we are seeing and where AI is going.

My top three trends in media including making and saving money, the various inflection points and the human side.  My biggest opportunity for the application of AI is across creation, delivery, engagement and performance enhancements. (Also find out who I would love to have lunch with and the most inspiring application of AI I’d heard about at the time).

Part of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and MBRF KnowTalk series at the London Book Fair (LBF) and streamed live in English, Arabic and French. This talk covered the impact of technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), on storytelling across creation, distribution and engagement.

Our panel provided a range of perspectives on use of standardization and processes in the broadcast and media business. Co-panellists included Andy Copeland of Dell, Melanie Moeller of Sky and David Orman in investment, with Stan Moote of IABM chairing. Good  debate on standards and processes. While they can be highly effective as a foundation to free up time to be agile and further innovate, their biggest benefit is felt to be of interoperability.

This panel in Belgium gathered together two vendors and two broadcasters. Maria spoke on the current trend of “Make money, save money”. This covered monetisation models including AVOD, BVOD, SVOD and FAST as well as saving money through methods including addressing password sharing and sustainability. Online video advertising has been higher revenue than SVOD since the beginning; passing linear TV advertising this year and projected the pass PayTV subscription in 2024.

IBC2022: VR, 8K, 4K, 3D, HDR, Codecs, Broadcast and Streaming… the history of video technology has hits, misses and slow burns but innovation has been a constant. We have seen the rapid move to IP across all areas, but what can we expect for the next five years? What is the next big thing and what will disappear? Maria Ingold gave a 10-minute mini-keynote covering password sharing, the move to hybrid AVOD and SVOD, and sustainability in encoding and content delivery. This is followed by a panel with Broadpeak and the DTG.

This OTT Question Time discusses Disney+’s move to launch an ad-supported tier. Together with  Brad Herman of Imagine Communications and Toby Holleran of Ampere Analysis and Maria Ingold of Synamedia. We explored the pros and cons of AVOD for Disney and Netflix, the potential revenues, whether they would need live and what other streamers might learn from these streaming giants.

Highly prescient to Netflix’s Q1 Earnings Statement, Maria spoke as part of Connected Media I IP at NAB Show 2022 on targeting piracy and targeted advertising. She focused on the decline in year-on-year revenue growth and the impact of password sharing (Netflix has 100+M additional non-paying households) and how hybrid AVOD / SVOD helps solve subscription saturation while shifting non-paying households onto a revenue-generating plan and enabling advertising reach to a previously un-addressable set of subscribers.

This OTT Question Time discusses the environmental impact of OTT streaming. Together with Luke Gaydon of Terra Neutra, Lars Larsson of Varnish Software, Maria Ingold of mireality and Gulliver Smithers of RampRate IT. It explores the annual energy consumption of streaming, the wider supply chain and glass-to-glass process, the resources needed to manufacture screens (TVs, phones, tablets) and the carbon footprint of creating content and on-location shooting.

The DTG’s fourth instalment of the COVID-19 series examines internet performance during the stay-at-home period. Hosted by the DTG CEO, Richard Lindsay-Davies, with a presentation by EY’s Lead Telecommunications Analyst, Adrian Baschnonga, and panel input from CEO of mireality, Maria Ingold, Fastly’s VP EMEA, Noel Penzer, and BT’s Director of TV and Broadband Infrastructure, Ian Parr.

In the second IBC 365’s series of explainer videos, Maria Ingold details the similarities of and differences between OTT and VOD services. What is OTT? Is it the same as VOD? How video has shifted from linear to on-demand? What are the payment models behind on-demand services?

Comments on video include: “Have to say that is the clearest explanation I have seen yet! Great for a newbie!”.

What does it take to succeed in the broadcast, media and technology business? Leading CEO & CTO Maria Ingold builds on her nearly 30 years of industry experience, including delivering one of the earliest and most successful on-demand movie services, to lay out the critical success factors for modern broadcast and media businesses to thrive.

Vertical innovation can advance sectors, but additional dimensions of innovation can make the impossible happen. Creating an innovation mindset means examining how we’re taught to think and how we structure industry. By changing how we expect kids to think we can encourage more – including girls – into STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and inspire them to think in new and novel ways. By changing industry structure we can encourage new forms of innovation which both creates new revenue opportunities and inspires further innovative thought.
